A fatal shooting involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has ignited widespread protests across the country and deepened divisions between federal and local authorities.
On January 7, 2026, ICE agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a Minneapolis resident and mother, during a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis. The incident occurred near 33rd Street and Portland Avenue, amid what DHS described as the “largest DHS operation ever” in the Twin Cities, involving over 2,000 agents.
Federal officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Vice President JD Vance, maintain that the shooting was in self-defense. They claim Good “weaponized her vehicle,” attempting to run over officers, labeling it an “act of domestic terrorism.” Ross, a 10-year veteran, was reportedly dragged by a vehicle in a separate incident last year, which federal spokespersons cited as context.
However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz strongly dispute this account, calling it “bulls—” and “propaganda.” Local leaders say video evidence shows no officers were in danger when Ross fired multiple shots into Good’s vehicle. A separate shooting involving Border Patrol agents in Portland wounded two people the following day, further escalating tensions.
